Judge Georgia Akers

In June 2008 my colleague, Judge Russell Austin, passed away. My friend and Associate Judge, Georgia Akers was appointed by the County Commissioners to fill out the balance of his term. Judge Emmett graciously agreed to let me swear in Judge Akers in the courtroom of the County Commissioners.

Judge Akers and I have known each other for a dozen years. She ran against me in the primary in '98, but that never interfered with our being friends. I asked her to work with me when I took the bench in
'99 because of her professional abilities and accomplishments, her strong sense of ethics and her dedication to doing a job right.

Judge Akers and I have had a wonderful relationship, working together so well that we can practically finish each other's sentences. I will truly miss seeing her on a daily basis. But, my loss is a gain for the people of Harris County, so it as all for the better.
